On this day in 1950, at 4:17 in the afternoon local time, two US Air Force F-80 Shooting Stars strafed a military airfield — inside the Soviet Union. Pilots Alton Quanbeck and Allen Diefendorf, disoriented on a mission near the Korean border, had flown more than sixty miles into Soviet territory and mistaken the Sukhaya Rechka airbase near Vladivostok for a North Korean target across the Yalu.
Their guns raked parked aircraft of the Soviet 821st Interceptor Aviation Regiment. No Soviet fighters rose to pursue; no deaths were reported in the accounts that survive. Moscow delivered a formal protest the next day, and about ten days later the United States did something rare in the Cold War: it admitted the error outright, expressed regret at the United Nations, offered to pay for the damage — an offer the Soviets never took up — and announced discipline within the responsible air group.
Quanbeck lived to tell the story himself, in a remarkable 1990 Washington Post memoir titled 'My Brief War With Russia.' The incident remains one of the only times American forces ever attacked Soviet home soil — an accidental five-minute war, ended by an apology, at a moment when the real thing was one misjudgment away.
Also on this day
- China formally created the People's Volunteer Army — the 'volunteer' framing chosen so that intervention in Korea would not be a declared war between states.
- Paul Magloire was elected president of Haiti.
🎵 On the radio that week: America’s No. 1 song was “Goodnight Irene” by Gordon Jenkins and The Weavers (Billboard best sellers) — a folk song adapted by Lead Belly, who died broke in December 1949 — one year before it became the biggest hit of 1950. That sound never really left — we recreate 1950s doo-wop and slow-dance ballads every week: read the stories behind our songs or listen on the lovesong1950s channel.
🎬 At the movies: “Sunset Boulevard” was in its third month and still drawing crowds to watch Gloria Swanson's Norma Desmond prepare for her close-up.
⚾ In sports: The unbeaten New York Giants — fresh off handing Cleveland its first-ever NFL shutout loss — won at Washington, while the Bears took the crosstown derby from the Cardinals.
