On this day in 1950, the US 1st Cavalry Division crossed the 38th parallel into North Korea — the spearhead of the main American ground advance beyond the line where the war had begun three and a half months earlier. South Korean units had crossed on October 1; now the weight of the Eighth Army followed, with the UN General Assembly's resolution of October 7 as its diplomatic cover.
The moment carried enormous stakes largely invisible to the men in the column. Zhou Enlai had warned through India's ambassador, six days earlier, that China would intervene if American troops crossed the parallel. Washington had weighed the warning and discounted it. The 1st Cavalry Division rolled north toward Pyongyang — it would be the first American unit into the North Korean capital ten days later.
The same day, Moscow lodged its formal protest over the previous day's accidental American strafing of a Soviet airfield near Vladivostok. In a single October week, the war had touched Soviet soil by mistake and crossed into North Korea on purpose. The border that mattered most — the Yalu — now lay ahead, and the armies that would meet there were both already in motion.

- The Goyang massacre began south of Seoul — one of the war's documented atrocities against civilians.
- The UK moved forward with nationalizing its iron and steel industry, with the state corporation newly in place.
- Born this day: Jody Williams, future Nobel Peace laureate for the landmine ban.
🎵 On the radio that week: America’s No. 1 song was “Goodnight Irene” by Gordon Jenkins and The Weavers (Billboard best sellers) — the Weavers' version with Gordon Jenkins' orchestra sold about two million copies, with 'Tzena, Tzena, Tzena' on the same disc. That sound never really left — we recreate 1950s doo-wop and slow-dance ballads every week: read the stories behind our songs or listen on the lovesong1950s channel.
🎬 At the movies: “Sunset Boulevard” was in its third month and still drawing crowds to watch Gloria Swanson's Norma Desmond prepare for her close-up.
⚾ In sports: The unbeaten New York Giants — fresh off handing Cleveland its first-ever NFL shutout loss — won at Washington, while the Bears took the crosstown derby from the Cardinals.
